Parathyroid disease

Parathyroides are four small glands in the neck that control the level of calcium in the blood by secreting a hormone called PTH. The most common disease of the parathyroides is primary hyperparathyroidism where one or multiple glands secrete an abnormally elevated level of PTH. Most of the time, this does not cause symptoms, but when primary hyperparathyroidism is not treated for a long period of time, it can cause problems such as kidney stones, osteoporosis, fractures and other problems. Somes cases of primary hyperparathyroidism are treated medically by an endocrinologist, but some require surgery. Otolaryngologists are specialists of treating hyperparathyroidism surgically. Through a small incision hidden in a neck crease, the surgeon will remove the gland or glands that are causing problems. You might leave the hospital the same day or be admitted for observation.
