What is otosclerosis?

Otosclerosis or otospongiosis is a middle ear disease that affects the ossicles. It is most often caused by abnormal deposits of bone at the base of an ossicle, the stapes, that prevents vibration of the ossicle and causes hearing loss. It has a familial tendency and is more frequent in women. It can affect both ears.
Otosclerosis manifests as hearing loss due to a decreased vibration of the ossicles. We call this conductive hearing loss, and it is diagnosed with a hearing test. A CT scan of your ears usually shows the surgeon where the otosclerosis is.
Luckily, otosclerosis is completely reversible with a procedure called stapedectomy. This procedure is offered at the Clinique ORL de Montréal.
