The ENT doctor: specialist of the vocal cords

A change in the voice is called dysphonia. Dysphonia can be normal and transient during a respiratory infection, but dysphonia that persists more than two weeks should be evaluated by an Otolaryngologist.
Causes of dysphonia can be:
– neurological, such as vocal cord paralysis
– inflammatory, such as reflux or an infection
– tumoral, such as nodules, polyps and sometimes cancers
– traumatic
An ENT specialist will examine your vocal cords with a camera that goes in through your nose. Depending on the cause, sometimes the treatment is medication, sometimes speech therapy, and sometimes surgery.
