Allergies, nose, and sinuses: is there a link?

Environmental allergies can present with difficulty breathing through the nose and sinus problems. Contrary to popular belief, allergies are not only seasonal. Some patients suffer from allergies year-round due to dust mites. Patients present with difficulty breathing through the nose that may or may not be assocaited with sneezing or itchiness. Allergies are identified by examining the nose and performing an allergy test. They are generally treated with saline rinses, topical corticosteroids, and antihistamine pills. Certain patients may be candidates for a desensitization treatment that eventually prevents the nose from reacting to the environment. Finally, when all these treatments fail or are not possibly, nasal surgery can help open up the airway and improve breathing.
